The man who has lived too long

I had a really good time tonight with some old friends. I also got a much needed epiphany while watching through my collection of films. It seems like ever since I started film school I’ve felt inferior and really spent alot of time doubting myself and my future. However, as I watched my work from the very first Crazy Horror Movie Nerd video I made to my most recent film The Gun, I watched myself grow and learn and better myself with every film. It seemed as though every film I made I learned something new, and improved myself as a filmmaker. I don’t mean that in an arrogant way either, I simply mean that with every film I learn a new aspect I might not have know before. When before my films were so horribly lit you could barely stand to watch them, they now utilize both high key and low key lighting to create my own visual style. Where my editing was once clunky and had no sense of flow whatsoever, I now appreciate the importance of editing and the way in which it can completely change a film. Where there once was a jumbled mess of unnatural improvisation, there now comes structured meaningful stories that reflect personal meanings through precise dialogue. Where 5 years ago there was a boy messing around with a new hobby, there now stands a student still looking to learn and better himself with every film, turning his love into a career.

Astonishing X-Men #50

so this past week whenever I went by The Great Escape to pick up my pile of comics that had been accumulating throughout the month, I noticed a comic on the shelf that had a little post-it note attached saying “Limit One Per Customer”. I was kind of curious, as I had never seen them post a note like this before, and assumed there must be something very significant about this comic. Though I was very tempted to purchase it out of sheer curiosity, I decided against it considering I already had such a large number of issues I already needed to pick up.

Well today, while roaming IGN and reading their weekly comic book reviews, I found out what all the fuss was over. Apparently, the issue had received a great deal of media attention surrounding the controversy of a homosexual proposal between two of the characters. Wow. Not only does this make me glad that I didn’t buy it, but this just makes me angry.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally in support of gay rights, I’m just not in support of cheap gimmicks to sell comics. Cheap thrills to get people rushing into shops just to buy something controversial that they think they can sell on ebay for millions in a couple of months. Nothing more. Sure, it goes along with the theme of the X-Men (prejudice, hate, ignorance), but at the same time it’s no different than killing off/bringing back a character or, oh, relaunching an entire universe just so you can release a whole crop of new #1’s. It’s just another pathetic trick by the sleezy comic book industry to try and sell more comics without having to put any real effort into story.

I suppose I shouldn’t be too overly harsh, since the reviewer did say that the writers tried their hardest to make it seem like a natural thing and not just a thrown in thrill, but it still kills me knowing that it was most likely some corporate big shot that said “Hey, you know what’s a hot topic right now? Gay marriage! You think you can through that in there somewhere? Great, we’ll inform the media outlets immediately.” Just makes all the stuff Eric Powell said with his commentary on the comic industry in his last issue of the Goon all the more relevant.

I swear I keep seeing signs for road work for the past 10 miles, but I am still waiting to see the actual road work.

I can’t even see where the fuck this traffic ends

Not even joking, it fades into the horizon.

Road work should be illegal

Seriously, nothing makes me angrier than being stuck in almost stand still traffic because of road work. I know it’s necessary, but could they not do it while there aren’t a bunch of people driving? I mean how hard would it be to do this shit at like 1-5 in the morning? Sure people will still be driving, but atleast there wouldn’t be miles of people up each others asses.

CORGI!!!!!

So I’ve decided that I want to use my graduation money to buy a corgi puppy…but I have to convince my parents to let me…so that’s probably not going to happen. :\

I mean if I don’t spend the money on a puppy, I’m just going to end up wasting it on something stupid.
